What insulation changes

  • You can use the room all year, not just from May to September.
  • It needs only a small heater, so it is cheaper to run.
  • Less condensation, so less damp, mould and damage to what you keep inside.
  • Less noise in and out, which matters for offices, studios and gyms.
  • It stays cooler on hot days as well as warmer on cold ones.

What a good quote includes

Six things to ask every builder to put in writing, so you can compare quotes properly.

  1. Insulation in all six sides

Floor, four walls and roof. Ask for the type and thickness of each; the floor is the side cheaper builds skip.

  2. A breathable membrane and a vapour layer

These keep moisture out of the walls. Without them, insulation gets damp and stops working.

  3. Double or triple glazing

Glass is where most heat is lost. Ask for the glazing specification of the doors and windows.

  4. A ventilation gap behind the cladding

Air moving behind the outer boards keeps the frame dry and makes the cladding last.

  5. A roof built to shed Sheffield rain

A rubber (EPDM) or similar membrane on a slight fall, with a gutter and somewhere for the water to go.

  6. Heating matched to the room

A panel heater or an air conditioning unit sized for the room. The better the insulation, the smaller the heater.

How it gets built

  1. Survey and fixed price

The builder checks the spot and explains the insulation they use, then gives a fixed price.

  2. Base

Kept clear of the ground so air can move underneath and damp stays out.

  3. Insulated shell

Insulation, membranes and glazing fitted as the frame goes up, before the cladding goes on.

  4. Finish

Inside walls, flooring, electrics and heating, then a check that doors and windows seal.

Questions people ask

Are garden rooms warm in winter?

A fully insulated room with double glazing and a small heater stays comfortable through a Sheffield winter. An uninsulated summer house does not.

How do I stop condensation in a garden room?

Insulation, a vapour layer on the warm side, ventilation and a little background heat. Condensation is a sign one of those is missing.

How thick should garden room insulation be?

It depends on the material. Ask each builder for the type and thickness in the floor, walls and roof so you can compare quotes like for like.

What is the cheapest way to heat a garden room?

Good insulation first, then a heater sized for the room on a thermostat or timer. An air conditioning unit can be efficient for heating as well as cooling.

Is an insulated garden room the same as a log cabin?

Not usually. Many log cabins have single-skin walls with no insulation. An insulated garden room is built in layers with insulation inside the walls.
