Garden gyms in Sheffield

A garden gym gives your kit a permanent home and saves the drive and the membership. You can train early, play your own music and drop the weights without anyone downstairs hearing it.

Most garden gyms in Sheffield cost between £17,000 and £35,000. The details that matter are the floor, the ceiling height and fresh air.

Is a garden gym right for you?

  • Your equipment lives in the garage, the spare room or the lounge.
  • You pay for a gym membership but rarely have time to get there.
  • You lift heavy and need a floor that can take it.
  • You want somewhere to train with the door shut and the music up.
  • There is room in the garden for at least 3 by 3 metres.

What a good quote includes

Six things to ask every builder to put in writing, so you can compare quotes properly.

  1. A floor built for weight

Ask for floor joists or a slab rated for your heaviest kit, then rubber gym flooring on top. A standard floor may flex under a loaded rack.

  2. Ceiling height

Overhead presses and pull-ups need room. Height is capped at 2.5 m within 2 metres of a boundary, so the room may need to sit further in.

  3. Fresh air and cooling

Opening windows on two sides give a through draught. An air conditioning unit keeps the room usable in summer.

  4. Wide doors

Bifold or double doors let you move equipment in and open the room up on warm days.

  5. Sockets for machines

Treadmills draw a lot of power. Ask for a dedicated socket where each machine will stand.

  6. Tough inside walls

Plywood behind the wall finish lets you fix racks, mirrors and storage securely.

How it gets built

  1. Survey and fixed price

List your equipment and how you train. The builder checks the ground and the route for the cable, then prices the job.

  2. Base

A base strong enough for your heaviest kit: often a concrete slab or a reinforced frame.

  3. Shell and services

Frame, roof, insulation, glazing and power from the house.

  4. Gym finish

Rubber flooring, reinforced walls, mirrors, sockets and cooling, ready for your kit.

Questions people ask

What floor do I need for a garden gym?

A base and floor rated for the weight of your equipment, with rubber gym flooring on top to protect it and soften noise. Tell the builder what your heaviest kit weighs.

How big should a garden gym be?

Around 10 m² suits cardio and floor work. A power rack and bench needs about 14 m², and two people training together need about 20 m².

Will a garden gym get too hot?

It can in summer, especially with south-facing glass. Opening windows on two sides and an air conditioning unit keep it comfortable.

Do I need planning permission for a garden gym?

Usually not, under permitted development, if it meets the height and size limits. Our planning guide sets them out.

Can I use a garden gym for personal training clients?

An occasional session is usually fine. Regular paying clients can count as a business use that needs planning permission.
