Garden studios in Sheffield
A garden studio is a room where you can leave the work out. Paint can dry, the kiln can sit in the corner and the drum kit stays set up, without taking over the house.
A studio usually needs more light, more space or more soundproofing than an office. Most cost between £16,000 and £35,000, depending on size and what the room has to do.
A free matching service, not a builder. We find you a local garden room builder. How it works
Is a garden studio right for you?
- Your materials, instruments or equipment are spread across the house.
- You need good, even light for painting, drawing or photography.
- You play or record music and want to keep the noise from the neighbours.
- You teach small classes or lessons and want a separate door.
- You want space that stays clean and quiet, not shared with the family.
Sizes and typical prices
| Size | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Small studio 4 × 2.5 m, 10 m². An easel, a bench, or a desk and keyboard. | £16,000 to £20,000 |
| Working studio 4 × 3.5 m, 14 m². Room to step back from the work. | £22,500 to £28,000 |
| Teaching or band room 5 × 3.5 m, 17.5 m². Space for a few people. | £28,000 to £35,000 |
Typical ranges at £1,600 to £2,000 per square metre. Soundproofing and roof lights add to these figures; ask for them as separate lines in the quote.
What a good quote includes
Six things to ask every builder to put in writing, so you can compare quotes properly.
Light from the right direction
Painters often want steady north light; roof lights spread daylight evenly. Say what you do so the builder can place the glass.
Soundproofing, if you make noise
Acoustic insulation, heavier boards and sealed doors cut sound. Ask how much reduction to expect; a normal insulated room is not soundproof.
A floor that suits the work
Vinyl or sealed flooring for paint and clay, something warmer for music. Kilns and heavy equipment may need a stronger base.
Power for your equipment
Kilns, amplifiers and lighting can need their own circuits. List your equipment so the electrician sizes the supply correctly.
Ventilation
Paint, glazes and solvents need fresh air. Opening windows plus a vent or extractor fan keeps the air clear.
Water, if you need a sink
A sink means a water supply and drainage from the house. It adds cost and is far cheaper to plan now than add later.

Questions people ask
Can a garden room be soundproofed for music?
It can be greatly reduced, not made silent. Acoustic insulation, heavier wall boards, sealed doors and double glazing all help. Ask the builder to specify the acoustic build in writing.
Which way should a painting studio face?
Many painters prefer large windows or roof lights facing north for even light without direct sun. If that is not possible, blinds and diffused roof lights help.
Can I put a kiln in a garden studio?
Often yes, with a suitable floor, clearance from walls, ventilation and a power supply sized for it. Check the kiln maker's requirements and tell the builder early.
Can I teach lessons in my garden studio?
Occasional lessons are usually fine. Regular classes with people coming and going may need planning permission, so check with the council first.
Does a studio need planning permission?
Usually not, under permitted development, if it meets the size and height limits and is used alongside the house. Our planning guide explains the limits.
